The SRAPPA Board and APPA Committees Need You!

SRAPPA is pursuing new members of the Board to fill upcoming vacancies. This year we have two open Board positions: Vice President for Chapter Affairs and our Membership Representative to the APPA Committee. If you are interested in expanding your APPA experience, or know someone who would be interested, apply now by sending your letter of interest and resume to the Nominating Committee Chairman, Dave Maharrey at dmaharrey@lsu.edu.

The Nominating Committee will review and make recommendations to the Board and is comprised of Dave Maharrey (Chairman; Louisiana State University), Tom Jones (Clemson University), Al Hill, (Tennessee State University), and Jay Williams (Virginia Military Institute).  Applications are due by June 16, 2017.

Vice President for Chapter Affairs:

The Vice President for Chapter Affairs will be elected to serve a three (3) year term and may be elected to serve an additional consecutive term. The duties and responsibilities of the Vice President for Chapter Affairs are as follows:

  1. Communicate and liaison with State Chapters and Representatives
  2. Communicate and liaison with Community Colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program
  3. Chair and coordinate the Emeritus and Retired Recognition Program
  4. Chair and coordinate the Emerging Professionals (EP) Program
  5. Participate in the Annual Conference Site Selection process
  6. Provide a written report for the SRAPPA Board of Directors Spring and annual meetings.
  7. Attend the SRAPPA Spring Board Meeting at fall host site city.
  8. Attend the APPA and SRAPPA annual meetings.
  9. Serves as a voting member on the Nominating Committee.
  10. Serve as a voting member on the Board of Directors.

Regional Representative to the APPA Membership Committee:

The APPA Membership Committee’s key role is to provide strategic guidance to retain and grow an actively engaged membership with the requisite knowledge, skills, abilities, and values to elevate the educational facilities professional, and to transform learning institutions.

The Committee reviews eligibility criteria for membership and makes recommendations with regard to changes to membership categories and dues. The Committee recommends to the Board strategies for growing APPA membership and retaining current members. The Committee accomplishes this in part by producing and approving an annual member recruitment plan and strategy, and periodically reviewing and adjusting the plan as needed to support attainment of annual targeted recruitment and retention goals.

Finally, the Membership Committee provides perspective on the needs and expectations of APPA’s membership and works in tandem with other APPA committees and task forces to ensure APPA products and services are in alignment with the APPA Member Value Statement and APPA Brand Values Statement (noted in the titled sections below).

  Scholarship Awards Update

Sixteen APPA U scholarships to attend the APPA Institute for Facilities Management or the Leadership Academy were awarded to deserving SRAPPA members. Each scholarship will cover their registration fee and $1,000.00 for travel and lodging expenses. The board also voted to accept educational scholarship applications two times per year rather than just once, changing the submission deadline dates going forward to the last day of August and the last day of February. This change makes it easier on the membership to submit applications and allows the board of directors the opportunity to award scholarships during the fall and spring board meetings.

This year we wanted to include a support prize for the State Conferences so we elected, through a random drawing of conference attendees, to award two 2017 SRAPPA Annual Conference registration scholarships. The winner’s names are to be drawn out of a hat by the SRAPPA Board Member attending the State Conference.

State Chapter President’s Calls

The Inaugural State Chapter President’s Conference Call took place March 27, 2017 and was in my opinion an overwhelming success. Some of the items discussed included updates from the Regional President’s call, upcoming State Conferences, Community College and HBCU engagement, challenges, successes, scams to be aware of, and future organizational plans.

EFP/CEFP

Please take advantage of one of the SRAPPA Credentialing discount coupons we’ve secured to provide the EFPs exam for $450 ($1,100 value) and CEFP exam for $550 (normally $1,300). This package includes the online prep course & test, with another test attempt within 30 days if needed. PLUS, SRAPPA provides a refund of $100 for EFP’s & $150 for CEFPs for successfully passing the exam.

Other News

Recently, SRAPPA was featured in an article entitled, “Best Practices: SRAPPA Leverages Training to Strengthen Membership”, and was featured on the APPA website.

SRAPPA and APPA news was shared to include SRAPPA’s desire to increase our organizational memberships through incentives such as offering one day attendance scholarships to non-member organizations, HBCU’s and Community Colleges within a fifty mile radius of our annual conference location.

SPRING 2017

 2017-18 APPA ELECTIONS

Candidate information for 2017-18 APPA Elections have been posted on the APPA website.  The list and link are at www.appa.org/vote, and we encourage any APPA and SRAPPA member to learn more about their candidates, even if they individually may not be eligible to vote.

The voting is open (as of March 22) and closes on April 25.  We are urging all eligible voters to do so, even though there aren’t any candidates from SRAPPA.

There is one Primary rep and one Proxy rep identified for each APPA member institution (both higher ed and Affiliate).  Both may vote, but if both do vote, only the Primary rep’s vote will count.  There’ll be only one vote counted for each institution.

As mentioned, voting opens March 22 and closes at midnight on Tuesday, April 25.  APPA will send out periodic messages to voters, along with reminders in the biweekly Inside APPA e-newsletter.

Voting Challenge

Jay Williams, SRAPPA President, has proposed a challenge to all Institutions in the SRAPPA Region!

GOAL: Increase SRAPPA voter participation.

CHALLENGE:  During the 2014 APPA Officer Elections, if SRAPPA has the highest percentage of voter participation among all six (6) APPA Regions, Jay will wear a dress to one of the functions at this year’s 2014 SRAPPA Conference at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.  “Make Jay Say Yes To The Dress!”

Has your Primary Representative or Proxy voted?

Watch a short video message from David Gray, APPA International Past President:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VJAKYm4biw

APPA Voting Opens

APPA voting will run from March 20 through April 16. We have one of our own, Mr. Paul Wuebold running for Vice President – Professional Affairs.  Paul has played an active role in our region for several years to include serving as your 2011-2012 President. His leadership and professionalism are unparalleled and will serve our region and our international APPA well.  *UPDATE* PAUL IS NOW RUNNING UNOPPOSED.

Ms. Kelly Ostergrant, MTSU, is chairing an SRAPPA Ad Hoc Committee to get the word out on the importance of voting in our region to ensure the right people are elected into these key positions.  Last year our voter turnout was 22%.  This year we want to blow that percentage out of the water.

APPA 100 Year Celebration Photo Memories

In preparing for the 100 year celebration, APPA is collecting pictures from all of the regions.  Make sure your institution and your memories from chapter meetings are included.  Go to http://100years.appa.org/ to upload your photos.  These can be photos from your campus, photos of you and or your colleagues at work, or photos from your time at APPA or SRAPPA sponsored events.  Please help us to make sure that SRAPPA is well represented!
